The National Armwrestling Team that brought joy to the Nation at the 2023 African Games by winning 41 medals, the largest number ever won by any national team in Ghana at a single event will once again represent the country at the 2024 World Armwrestling Championship to be staged in Moldova, from August 15 to 25, 2024.
The pullers, both male and female who have been in camp for some time now will depart Accra to Chisinau-Moldova on Thursday 15 August for the World Championship.
Travelling with the team are Edward Yamoah of the Ghana Immigration Service, Grace Mintah of the Ghana Police, Godwin Sackey and Blessing Abeka Nunoo, both of the Ghana Immigration Service.
However, the Golden Arms will be led by Charles Osei Asibey, Founder and President of the Ghana Armwrestling Federation, who also doubles as the President of Africa Armwrestling and Vice President of the World Armwrestling Body.
He will therefore be accompanied by the Head Coach of the Golden Arms Nii Otoo Larkyne, Husseini Akuetteh Add-Head Referee for the Armwrestling Federation of Ghana, Africa and World Armwrestling Referees Panel member and Abigail Fremah, a senior referee.
At a media briefing, President Osei Asibey said, “as a Federation, we would have loved to take a bigger number, but due to inadequate funding, we have drastically reduced the size of the team”.
He added, “Participating in world events builds capacity and the confidence of our athletes; so in as much as we are disappointed with the numbers, we also take solace in the fact that we will use this championship to give our athletes and officials the needed exposure, thanks to the Ministry of Youth & Sports, the board of Ghana Armwrestling, and the athletes”.
Meanwhile, the Moldovan National Sport Federation of Armwrestling (FNSARM) will welcome and host about 1,500 pullers, officials and enthusiasts from more than sixty (60) countries across the world, the biggest gathering in terms of numbers under the leadership of President Alexandru Grumeza and General Secretary Anna Belenciuc.
The competitions which will be held for all age groups from junior to senior and grand masters, as well as events in para-arm wrestling in both left and right arm battles will be broadcast live on TV and will be accessible to all World Armwrestling Federation members and media partners in addition to live streaming on the Olympic Channel platform and WAF YouTube platforms.
