Ghana’s Sports Minister, Mustapha Ussif has lashed out players who play for the various national teams for their lack of patriotism and desire to die for the country anytime they are called on to represent the nation.
The sports minister made these revelations on Ghanaian players attitude at the 29th Ordinary Session of the Ghana Football Association Congress held at the Great Hall of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi on 10 July, 2023.
Hon. Ussif made the assertion that even though the government and the FA are doing their part to ensure that the players give off their best for the national teams, their output doesn’t reflect on the field of play whenever they represent the country. He enumerated some of the government contribution to the national teams including the purchase of tickets, organized friendly matches, extended training camps, per diems, and meals but still the players fail to glitter in tournaments and rather seemed to prioritize monetary issues above national pride.
“The National Teams will continue to receive support from the state, and it is our duty to ensure that all resources are fully accounted for, satisfying the expectations of the Ghanaian people”. He continued, “It is also the responsibility of the players and technical team to exhibit the spirit of nationalism and patriotism whenever they get the chance to represent the country and that players should not lose sight of the greater purpose of representing Ghana on the international stage.”
Hon. Mustapha urged national team players to recognize the sacrifices been made by government and the immense support provided. He called on them to demonstrate their genuine love for the country and a commitment to wear the national jersey.
Meanwhile, in recent past, performances of the various national teams from women football to the Black Stars, Black Meteors, Black Satellite and Starlet have been abysmal in matches and tournaments.
