‘It Is A Lie’, I Never Received US$100,000 As Claimed By Minister – C.K Akonnor

Former Black Stars coach C.K Akonnor has made it clear that he was never paid an amount of US$100,000 at the time he was sacked as a coach of the Senior National Team.

He has described the Sports Minister’s comment as inaccurate based on the fact that, he knew what he was given when his contract was terminated by the Ghana Football Association.

The Minister of Youth and Sports Hon. Mustapha Ussif at a press briefing last Wednesday, made claims that, the State still owed both Akonnor and Serbian coach, Milovan Rajevac, but categorically admitted that “the Ex-Black Stars skipper did not go empty-handed but was paid US$100,000 as part of his exit package.”

However, in a quick response to the Minister’s claims from his Germany home, Akonnor said, Hon. Ussif got it all wrong because he knew exactly how much he was paid at the time.

“I never received the kind of money the minister mentioned. I don’t want to put out how much they paid me but it was not US$100,000 as the minister said”, an upset Akonnor told the media in an interview.

He continued, “My contract is still with the FA and if he likes he can go and check the agreement we had and see before making the claim and he will know that he is wrong”.

The 47-year-old trainer explained that upon the termination of his contract, he was paid some cedis and was asked to convert it to dollars using the Bank of Ghana rate then. Even though the rate was much lower than the prevailing market rate at the time, it was nowhere near the amount being quoted by the minister.

Coach Akonnor further debunked the minister’s figure of US$200,000 as being the arrears left to be paid to him, contesting, that was also inaccurate.

Meanwhile, the Minister admitted the fact that, though they(Ministry) have not paid the coach due to financial constraints, they still have a payment schedule to honor the debt as and when the Ministry get the funds to pay C.K Akonnor, He assured.
