The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has sacked coach Chris Hughton and his entire technical team for a poor showing and early exit from the ongoing 2023 African Cup of Nations been hosted by Ivory Coast.
The couch who couldn’t win a single match from all the three games played at the group stage of the competitions saw his tenure come to an end a day after the Black Stars were booted out of the tournament
Black Stars broke the heart of millions of Ghanaians on Monday night after they have blew away a two goal lead with 4minutes to the end of the whole game. The 2-2 drawn game against Mozambique saw the Black Stars fail to advance to the knock-stages of the tournament.
Mathematically, Black Stars had a chance of progressing into the next stage of the tournament but Ghana’s elimination was finally confirmed when Cameroon came from behind to defeat Gambia by 3-2.
However, as a result of the poor performance of Hughton and his backroom staff the Ghana Football Association issued a statement on Wednesday morning to sack Hughton and disbanded the entire technical team.
Official statement from the FA website read;
“The Ghana Football Association wishes to announce that Chris Hughton has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the senior National team with immediate effect,”
It continued, “The Executive Council has also taken a decision to dissolve the technical team of the Black Stars.” “The Ghana Football Association will in the coming days provide a roadmap on the future direction of the Black Stars.” The statement ended.
The British born Ghanaian coach, who took on the job in February 2023, was tasked to revive the Black Stars as well as take them to the 2023 African Cup of Nations final after a disappointing World Cup campaign in Qatar.
Black Stars, under Hughton’s management in this year’s Afcon suffered a 2-1 loss to Cape Verde, drew 2-2 with Egypt, and experienced a bizarre turn of events in their must-win game against Mozambique when they threw away a 2 goal lead in the 92nd minute with less than four minutes to the end of the game.
