BOXING: NATIONAL BOXING TEAM IN SIXTH DAY OF RESIDENTIAL TRAINING AHEAD OF INTERNATIONAL COMPETITIONS

The National Boxing Team are in the sixth day of their six weeks intensive residential training in Cape Coast ahead of the upcoming international competitions.

The team made up of both male and female boxers from Black Bombers and Hitters respectively are undergoing this organized training specifically to prepare them well for the impending international competitions slated in March, 2024.

The first major international competition which takes place in Busto Arsizio, Italy on 4 to 11 March, 2024 will be 1st World Qualifying Tournament-Boxing Road to Paris. While the second international competitions also takes place in Accra-Ghana on 15 to 25 March, 2024 where the boxers will be seeking to annex gold medals for Ghana in the 13th All African Games.

The national boxing team concluded the final phase of non-residential training few weeks back at the Accra Sports Stadium with the boxers determined to make amends by redeeming themselves from the poor performance exhibited at the Africa Olympic qualifiers in Dakar, Senegal in September, 2023 where none of the twelve boxers both male and female qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic games in France.

However, the team have been strengthened with the inclusion of Ghana’s sole Olympic medalist from the Tokyo 2020 games, Samuel Takyi, with other additions like British-born Ghanaian heavyweight boxer Mark Kojovi Ahondjo and Amadu Mohammed.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s rising star in boxing and Africa’s only boxing medalist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games Samuel Takyi, will now compete in the Light Welterweight division (63.5kg) as he move up in weight.

Currently the future of Ghana boxing hopes lies in Amateur boxing as it remains key to the country’s future international competitions successes, underpinned by the fact that, it had contributed 80% of the Nations Olympic medals and 60% of Commonwealth games medals since Ghana attained it independent.
