Nigerian top athletic Tobi Amusan today won two gold medal for her country in the women’s 4 x 100 meters heat at the University of Ghana sports stadium.
The event which saw the Nigerian conquer her fierce contenders from Ghana in the 100m hurdles in a time of 12.89 seconds, and just within an hour led Nigeria’s strong ladies to beat Liberia and Ghana to win the much anticipated 4 x 100 relay in 43.05 seconds.
Tobi fortunately escaped a yellow card offense over a false start in the 100 meters hurdles but that did not scare her to loose confidence and went ahead to win the gold medal for her country.
On the other hand, Ghana’s women’s 4×100 relay team which includes Hor Halutie, Benedicta Kwartemaa, Janet Mensah and Mary Boakye placed third to win bronze medal for Ghana with much applauds from fans as they took a lap of honour for their display in a highly competitive race.
However, in the men’s race, Nigeria once again stole the show to make it double over their bitterest rivals Ghana. The Nigerians registered 38.41 seconds and Ghana with a team made up of Edwin Gadayi, Benjamin Azamati, Solomon Hammond and Joe Paul Amoah made a time of 38.43 seconds.
The last time Nigeria hosted the competitions, Ghana were the better side over their Nigerian counterparts and this year’s event been hosted here in Accra, Ghana seems to have been revenge for Nigeria.
Meanwhile, Liberia showed the stuff they are made of by placing third in the race signaling the qualities they possess going into the future.
The Nigerian athletics team have been the toast of thousands of fans who have patronized the track and field since it started at the University of Ghana sports stadium. They have so far swept all the short distances race including the 400 meters hurdle.
