Rodri made history on Monday night as he joined the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, George Oppong-Weah, Lionel Messi, Zinedine Zidane, Johan Cruyff and Luka Modric to claim his first Ballon d’Or crown.
The Manchester City player was named the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner after beating Kylian Mbappe, Jude Bellingham, Erling Halland, Vinicius Junior and others to the prize and becoming the first Premier League player to wear the crown since Cristiano Ronaldo won it in 2008.
Over the past years, the award has long been dominated by Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, with the pair having won it 13 times between them in the past 16 years.
But this year’s prize put the Spaniard midfielder ahead of his contenders as a worthy winner. He was rewarded for his exceptional performances in the 2023/2024 campaign for both club and country winning silverwares in addition.
The midfielder was the kingpin in the Spanish team that won the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany. He was also named the Player of the tournament after La Roja beat England in the final.
Rodri has long been the scorer of important goals for Man City as he delivered the 2023 Champions League trophy to City out of his last gasp goal scored. He finished the campaign with nine goals at club level in 50 appearances, one of which was a clinching goal on the final day of the Premier League season against West Ham United thar won Manchester City the league title.
With his improved performance, the defensive midfielder also provided an impressive 14 assists in all competitions for the league champions – doubling his 2022/23 tally.
Rodri isn’t just a destroyer of counter-attacks, but as a back four shield, he’s also a chief creator of attack for his club side and country.
Judging frome his impressive attributes and qualities, Rodri’s claim to the crown is a well deserving one, as no deep-lying midfielder has ever won the award.
Rodri, who can be described as the world’s best holding midfielder, went for the award held on Monday 28 October, 2024 in clutches, as he nurse a long term injury.
