DRAW FOR TOTALENERGIES CAF AFRICAN CUP OF NATIONS QUALIFIERS, EGYPT AND GHANA FIND THEMSELVES IN A DIFFICULT GROUP

Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) record holders Egypt, has been drawn in what many believe as the most difficult Group during the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2025 Qualifiers Draw held in Johannesburg, South Africa last Thursday.

In history, ‘The Pharaohs’, are regarded as the most successful country in the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations, who have won the AFCON seven times, will play two on-form teams, Cape Verde and Mauritania alongside Botswana in Group C.

Both Cape Verde and Mauritania had an outstanding performance in the previous TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire to the surprise of football connoisseurs.

On the other hand, four times AFCON champions Ghana, also find themselves in a group that many has described as tricky and tough for the Stars.

Ghana is in Group F’ with Sudan who top’s their group with an amazing outing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and also coached by former Black Stars player and coach James Kwesi Appiah, alongside Angola and Niger.

However, Cote d’Ivoire, led by coach Emerse Faé, who rescued ‘The Elephants’ on the brink of elimination and made history for himself at the last Africa Cup of Nations tournament held in Cote d’Ivoire – was amongst the draw assistants together with Moroccan legend Marouane Chamakh

The Ivorians have been drawn in Group G alongside former champions Zambia, Sierra Leone, and Chad.

The Elephants are determined to defend the trophy won after their thrilling 2-1 victory over Nigeria in the previous final held in Abidjan earlier this year.

Meanwhile host nation Morocco, who are placed in Group B, will play Gabon, Central African Republic, and Lesotho. The Atlas Lions, assured of participation as hosts, will approach the qualifiers with all the seriousness it deserve taking advantage of home ground support to showcase their strength ahead of the main tournament which will be held from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026 in Morocco.

The first and second-placed teams from each of the eleven groups, excluding Group B where Morocco competes, will qualify for an automatic spot in the tournament.

The qualifiers for the much-anticipated TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations will commence in September 2024 and end’s in November 2024.
