HIS EXCELLENCY JOHN DRAMANI MAHAMA TO PRIORITISE SPORTS INFRASTRUCTURE IN HIS NEXT GOVERNMENT IF ELECTED

Former President of Ghana and presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama has stated to make sports infrastructure and it’s development a priority in his next government if he is elected into office come December 2024.

The former President who has a track record when it comes to infrastructural development, to the point of earning him the accolade, ‘The Nation Builder’, has made it a point to enhance sports infrastructure nationwide when elected to office since sports will play a key part in his 24-hour economy policy.

Ghana is faced with serious challenges in terms of sports facilities, many of which are now deteriorating badly to a level that do not befit a nation that pride itself of having abundant sports talent.

In a question posed to the affable former leader by Sadick Obama at the meet the press series on Sunday evening at Kempinski Hotel in Accra, His Excellency John Mahama in his usual calm and honesty demeanour answered,… “I will not stand here and promise that we will build a new stadium, but I have said that under the Big Push, we intend to spend a certain amount of money over five years on providing good infrastructure including roads, bridges, agro-industrial parks, and so on and so forth, that could include sports facilities.”

He further added, “As part of the 24-hour economy, sports can play a very good part, and we will invest in sports facilities and help the private sector engage in sports facilities to provide service at night so our people can enjoy that service,” he concluded.

Ghana currently has few sports facilities in Accra, Takoradi, Tamale, Kumasi and Cape Coast but they are all not up to the international standards. The only facilities that has a bit of upgrade to host multi-purpose sports events is the Borteyman and Legon Sports Complex, built recently for the 2023 African Games.
