
2ND EDITION OF ‘DUKU’ PARA CYCLING FESTIVAL CHAMPIONSHIP COMES TO A SUCCESSFUL END

The Para Cycling festival, organized by Dot Ateliers and the Ghana Cycling Federation came to a successful end on January 1, 2025 at the Osu Castle Total Filling Station in Accra.
The competition featured male and female tandems, male amputee, and male hand cycling categories, with athletes showcasing their talents, skills and power on the the Streets of Accra.
In the male tandem race, Peter Dery and Benjamin Boahen Agyemang took the top spot with a remarkable time of 2:02:39.89 and went away with a cash prize of Gh3,000 cedis, gold medals and souvenirs from the sponsors.
Emmanuel and George followed closely, securing second place with a time of 2:18:22.86 with a cash prize of GH 2,000 cedis, silver medals and souvenirs from sponsors.
However, Frederick Assor and Philip Randolf claimed the bronze medal with a time of 2:19:25.39 and a cash prize GH 1,000 cedis as well as souvenirs from sponsors
In the female tandem category, saw Favour Ayiglo and Abigail A. Tetteh emerging victorious, completing the race in 1:08:02.24 with a cash prize of Gh3,000 cedis and souvenir from sponsors whiles Beauty Fiator and Majorie Quaye both taking the second place with a time of 1:09:45.67 and a cash prize of Gh2,000 cedis and souvenirs from sponsors.
Richard Yaw Atta, delivered a powerful performance in the male amputee category, crossing the finish line in 2:04:08.24 to claim the gold medal and a cash prize of GH3,000.00, and souvenirs from sponsors.
Both Ebenezer Mensah Adjei and Kingsley Ofori secured second and third places with a time of 2:11:45.68 and 2:15:00.87 respectively, and cash prizes of Gh2,000 and Gh1,000 as well as souvenirs from sponsors.
On the otherhand, in the hand cycling category, Frank Yaw Fuji successfully completed the 17KM course in 1:10:12.97, earning himself the top spot.
The winners of each category were rewarded with cash prizes and medals courtesy Mr Amoaku Boafo and Dot Ateliers, as those gesture were not only meant to recognize the athletes’ hard work and dedication but to also serve as a motivation for them to continue pushing beyond boundaries in their respective disciplines to make the country proud in any international competition.
The event featured six divisions, which includes, the Male Tandem, Female Tandem, Hand Cycling (male and female), and Amputee (male and female).
Meanwhile, according to Justice Awuku, Project Director of the Duku Festival Cycling Race, “We noticed that physically challenged individuals have been marginalized, so we decided to organize a special event for them.”
He further, expressed satisfaction with the turnout and performance of the participants, highlighting the impressive display of athleticism and sportsmanship. “It was mind-boggling to see a blind person riding a bicycle. It was very interesting and competitive, so I think thumbs up to them.”
The chairman, on his part, also called on corporate Ghana to support para-cycling, emphasizing the capabilities and talents of individuals with disabilities. “We can’t continue to marginalize them. We have taken it upon ourselves to organize this event every year, and we hope to do it on a bigger stage.”
Frederick Assor, a renowned para-athlete in Ghana who placed third in the competition, praised the organizers for creating a platform for persons with disabilities. “This event has taken a lot of stress off us. We came together, meet friends, have fun, and compete.” he said.
Shaaban Mohammed, General Secretary of the Ghana Cycling Federation, hailed the event as a resounding success. “The performance was amazing, and the prizes were impressive. We’re encouraged by the opportunities this event presents for para-cyclists in Ghana.”
The event was made possible by sponsors, including Dot Ateliers, Mr. D. J. Hyun, President of Derbywheel Incorporated, and the Association for Sports Federation On Disability (ASFOD).
The Duku Festival Paracycling Race has once again demonstrated its commitment to promoting inclusivity and empowering athletes with disabilities.
