The Director General of the National Sports Authority (NSA), Mr Yaw Ampofo-Ankrah has called on the current generation of youth to develop the interest of playing draught as a game that develops the mind, but dwells much attention on the importance of its public and corporate investment.
He said this at a Draught Tournament held on Sunday, September 21, 2025 at Dansoman in Accra.
A mini tournament that begun with much excitement, enthusiasm, suspense, mental dexterity and skill saw fans eagerly anticipating the final showdown between two most populous draught players, in the name of Michael Abu, highly referred to as Abu National, and Theophilus Quaye, alias Nii Ayi Chameleon.
Mr Yaw Ampofo Ankrah, who was the special guest of honor hailed the Dansoman Draughts Association for organizing the competition. The NSA boss expressed his admiration for the quality of play and underscored the need for corporate investment in draughts.
“First of all, I will congratulate the Dansoman Draughts Association for organizing this Draughts Competition. What I have seen here today has lifted my spirits. It has really been an eye opener.”
He continued “We should invest more in draughts as a sport because it does not cost much to invest in it. If we invest in this sport, we can go to the world championship. It falls under recreation and sports too.” He further urged on the youth of today to play draughts as it opens up the minds.
“It requires concentration, analytical mind, critical thinking and decision making so I will encourage the youth to join the playing of draughts,” Ampofo Ankrah stated.
The director general since assuming office has been playing critical role to ensure that all sporting activities either professional or for recreation get the needed attention it deserves.
