‘DADDY LUMBA, WAS A BROTHER AND A LEGEND’- AMAKYE DEDE, AS HE PAYS TRIBUTE TO THE DEMISE OF LEGENDARY LUMBA

As millions of Ghanaians and others across the globe mourns and pays tribute to the passing of music icon, Daddy Lumba, veteran Hilife musician, Amakye Dede, has added his voice in respect of the painful exit of Lumba.

In a heartfelt tribute to the late Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, Amakye Dede expressed deep sorrow over the loss of a man he described as both a ‘brother and a legend.’

“Today, I’ve lost a brother and a true legend. Daddy Lumba was more than a musician — he was family,” Amakye Dede stated.

The ‘iron boy’ hit maker, acknowledged the indelible mark Daddy Lumba left on Ghana’s music industry as well as the world over and emphasized the emotional void his passing has caused.

The legendary Ghanaian musician Daddy Lumba, died on Saturday 26 July, 2025 at the Bank hospital in Accra following the confirmation of his demise by the family. The music icon-Daddy Lumba had over 34 albums to his credit.

History of Charles Kojo Fosu:

Daddy Lumba as he is popularly called, was born as Charles Kwabena Fosu in Nsuta, near Mampong, in the Ashanti Region of Ghana on the 29th of September 1964 to Comfort Ama Saah and Charles Kojo Fosu Snr, both were teachers.

In the early 1980s, he debuted on the highlife scene with his massive hit “Yeeye Aka Akwantuo Mu” with Nana Acheampong (known together as the “Lumba Brothers”). This song depicted the number of Ghanaian immigrants that originally leave the country to seek greener pastures abroad but make those temporary homes permanent due to financial, emotional, or other unforeseen hardships.
‘Yereye Aka Akwantuo Mu’ was with his colleague Nana Acheampong under the name Lumba Brothers, spawned several hits and established Daddy Lumba as a versatile and highly gifted musician. Lumba’s wife, Akosua Serwa, produced the album.

Daddy Lumba has been consistent with the release of multiple-hit albums since then, and has established himself as one of Ghana’s most popular Highlife singers of his generation.

He introduced a future love song master, Ofori Amponsah, through his blockbuster hit album titled ‘Wo Ho Kyere’ in 1999. Daddy Lumba’s pairing in 1999 with the rising star then Ofori Amponsah, produced five hit songs that shot Ofori Amponsah into the limelight.
Altogether Lumba has sprung the careers of 13 different Ghanaian musicians.

Another collaborative effort was ‘Ahenfo Kyinye’ in 2004 with Pat Thomas. Daddy Lumba’s other albums include: Obi Ate Meso Bo, Sika Asem, Ohia Asem, Playboy, Sesee Wo Se, Odo Foforo, Biribi Gyegye Wo, Back For Good, Mesom Jesus, Hwan Na Otene, Ebi Se Eye Aduro, Aben Wo Ha, Adepa Hye Adepa, Poison, , Mato Odo Mu, Bubra, Tokrom, Asee Ho and Odo Bewu Dee and many others.

In December 2007. Lumba proved that he was still a force to reckon with in the music industry when he scored several nominations in the 2008 Ghana Music Awards with his album ‘Tokrom’. In all he has more than 30 albums that he wrote and produced. Altogether he has released more than 27 albums as a songwriter, or singer or producer or all three including his 25th album, Sika, in December 2008. His last release was 2016’s “Enko den”. But he later released few others.

In 1999, he won three awards including Best Album, Artist of the Year and the Most popular Song of the Year at the Ghana Music Awards. Before the year 2002, Daddy came out every year with a hit album.

His solo career has not been short of controversy; one moment he would release a gospel album and the next he would shock people with his provocative lyrics and music videos. He owns his own studio where he does all his work and also owns machines for mastering, loading, printing and shrink wrapping exclusively for his works.

Lumba’s music has evolved over the years to reflect the changes in taste and demands for music; he can currently be described as a contemporary highlife artist. Daddy Lumba has won several Ghana Music Awards and other excellence awards and continue to appeal to the young and the old.

In 2014, He released his “Awoso” album that included the hit “Nea Woho Beto Wo” that won him worldwide praise. The song which fans have given it a new title of “Yentie obia” became an instant hit and won Daddy Lumba Highlife Artist of the Year and Highlife Song of the Year at the 2015 Vodafone Music Awards.

In 2015 Charles Kojo Fosu, released a gospel single hit with his longtime partner Nana Acheampong from the original Lumba Brothers titled “Afihyie Boa”. His current album released titled ” Enko Den” with some hit songs like Biakoye, Yemfa Anadwo Nye Nda. He also recorded a song for the late Daasebre Gyamena titled ” Daasebre Gyamena. In 2019 he released a single song titled ‘Ɛmmaa Da Woase’

Daddy Lumba in recent years has also released some hit songs. One that featured prominently in the Ghanaian music space with the music video shot in the house of popular business man ‘KENPONG’ as he featured in the music video.

Lumba also established a radio station called DL Fm 106.9 in Accra.

Charles Kojo Fosu, hails from the ‘ASENE’ Family, in the Ashanti Region.

Daddy Lumba, will forever be remembered for his countless hit songs that touched the lives of many and continues to inspire many others as well.
