Medeama’s attempt to make history in Africa football comes to an end after the club suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Algerian side CR Belouizdad last Friday at Stade du 5 Juliet in Algiers.
The Algerian champions showed their strength and quality of play by dominating the game during the entire 90 minutes, winning 3-0 to avenge their earlier 2-1 defeat to the Tarkwa based side.
Belouizdad opened the scoring through their midfielder Abdelraouf Benguit in the 27th minute, followed by another goal from Cameroonian forward Leonel Wamba making it two.
However, Lamin Jallow from Gambia worsened the plights of the Ghanaian team by scoring a third goal to secure a convincing win for the Algerian side.
Despite the win for Belouizdad, both teams could not progress to the next phase of the competitions. It was rather Al Ahly and Young Africans who secured qualification to the quarter final stage after the latter defeated Young Africans by a goal to nil.
The Ghanaian champions will now turn their attention on the GPL hoping to win the local league this season to afford them another opportunity to go to Africa again next year.
The experienced gained from the continental championships will be a learning curve for Medeama going forward drawing positives from their previous group games win against top opponent AC Horoya from Guinea and Belouizdad.
