The United States of America President Donald Trump, in a hearty mood joined Chelsea players to celebrate the FIFA Club World Cup trophy won yesterday at the MetLife stadium in America.
The entire Chelsea players were left baffled to see President Donald Trump join them after handing over the glittering trophy to James to celebrate their Club World Cup victory.
According to Reece James, President Donald Trump “wanted to stay” during Chelsea’s FIFA Club World Cup trophy celebrations.
Chelsea beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 at MetLife Stadium on July 13 2024, courtesy Cole Palmer’s brace and a composed finish from Joao Pedro before half-time.
The Blues, won the final by a three-goal margin for the fourth time, repeating in the 1955 Community Shield 3-0 win over Newcastle United, the 2019 UEFA Europa League 4-1 win over Arsenal and the 2025 UEFA Conference League 4-1 win over Real Betis.
However, after President Trump helped hand out the individual awards and medals to players before the trophy itself, he walked to the side with FIFA President Gianni Infantino, to hand over the trophy to James and remained next to him for the trophy lift.
Reece James later confirmed in an interview that the US president wanted to stay for the celebration and congratulated the team on their success.
“They told me that he was going to present the trophy and then exit the stage. I thought that he was going to exit the stage but he wanted to stay,” said James.
“To be honest, it was quite loud. I couldn’t hear too much. He just congratulated me and the team for lifting the trophy and told us to enjoy the moment.”
On the other hand, Cole Palmer, who was named Player of the Tournament, was also visibly perplexed by president Donald Trump’s presence on the stage.
Palmer added: “I knew he was going to be here but I didn’t know he was going to be on the stand when we lifted the trophy. I was a bit confused, yes.”
Chelsea have become the first English team to win multiple Club World Cup titles, including the previous format, and have not lost an international final (excluding super cups) since 2013.
