TENNIS : NATIONAL UNDER-12 TENNIS TEAM MAKE’S GHANA PROUD AT THE CONFEDERATION OF AFRICAN TENNIS U-12 CHAMPIONSHIP

The National Under-12 Boys tennis team of Ghana, were conquerors at this year’s Confederation of African Tennis(CAT) Under 12 championships, by winning gold medal to clinch the top prize at stake.

This was made possible through the ingenuity and commanding performances from young tennis players like Jeff Frimpong, Ethan Delali Dzidzornu and Eric Toto.

The championships which took place from 6th to 13th October 2024, at the National tennis center in Gaborone was led by Charles Abugbila as coach for Team Ghana.

Ghana which found itself in Group A, started the tournament against Zimbabwe on day one, where Ghana won 2-1.
The team did well on day two, by beating the North African giant Tunisia 2-1. Team Ghana extended their group lead with a commanding 3-0 victory over Botswana the host nation to top the group.

Ghana maintained their winning mentality to beat Cameroon 2-1 in the semifinals, before taking on South Africa where Eric Torto of stadium tennis club lost to Mpho Bowers 1-6, 1-6. However, Jeff Frimpong of Ghana tennis club, Adabraka turned things around for Team Ghana to defeat Nicholas Van Der 6-3, 6-4.

In the doubles event, which was the deciding match, Ethan Delali Dzidzornu of St. Francis tennis club in Ashaiman beautifully paired with Jeff Frimpong to outwit Mpho Bowers and Nicholas Van Der 7-5, 6-4.

ln an interview, head coach, Charles Abugbila said, “I am delighted we have achieved this, I can’t remember the last time we conquered Africa, am happy to lead these lads in making this historic moment”.

Meanwhile, the vice president of the Ghana Tennis Federation, Cedric Dzelu was around to cheer up the team and motivated them to keep up their good performance as they make the country proud.
