Ghana yesterday secured a vital home win over Angola in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium through a 96 minute goal scored by Antoine Semenyo.
Black Stars fought throughout the entire 90 minute to find the all important goal but to no avail until Antoine Semenyo’s late strike through a goal mouth melee that ensured Chris Hughton’s first win in charge as head coach for the Black Stars.
The win on Thursday ease’s pressure off Chris Hughton as that was his first game as manager since his appointment in March 2023 to replace Otto Addo who left the job after Ghana’s World cup exit from the group stages in Qatar last year.
Kamaldeen Sulemana came close twice in the second half to put Ghana in the lead but all his efforts were thwarted by the ingenuity of the Angolan goalkeeper who was solid on the day to keep his team in the game.
However. towards the tail end of the game, Semenyo who came on to replace Inaki Williams in the 70th minute scored the only wining goal for Ghana in the 96th minute to put fans at the stadium and the entire country into a state of frenzy and jubilation.
The victory put Ghana on top of the table in Group E’ with seven(7) points, three points ahead of Angola and Central Africa Republic who all have four(4) points apiece with Madagascar who sit at the bottom of the table with just a point after three games.
The Black Stars will leave Ghana to Angola on Saturday 25th March, 2023 for the return fixture on Tuesday in Luanda.
