The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) has taken a positive step to help shape the dwindling sports in Ghana as it decides to engage political parties and their presidential aspirants to make policy inputs to the manifestos of the presidential aspirants as the nation heads into the 2024 elections.
The decision by the leadership of SWAG led by Kwabena Yeboah to indulge in this strategic engagement with key political parties aspirants is to advocate for the prioritisation of sports in their election manifestos ahead of the 2024 general elections.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the deputy general secretary of the association Ken Odeng Adade read as, “The Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG), is embarking on a series of strategic engagements with political parties and their presidential aspirants to advocate for the prioritisation of sports in their elections manifestos.
This strategic move by SWAG is aimed at advancing the status of sports in Ghana from a recreational activity to a significant sector with economic and developmental potential. By aligning sports with scientific research and evidence-based practices, SWAG believes it is crucial for candidates seeking the presidency to elevate sports to a central focus of their political agendas”.
The statement further read, “To this end, SWAG has officially reached out in writing to all declared presidential aspirants and will be scheduling follow-up meetings at their earliest convenience. These meetings aim to address the key challenges facing sports development in Ghana and to gain insight into the specific policies the candidates plan to implement for the advancement of the sports sector.
SWAG looks forward to engaging in meaningful conversations with the presidential aspirants to explore how sports can be effectively utilised as a catalyst for national development”. The statement ended.
Governments over the past years have taken least interest in the development of sports in Ghana comparative to other socio-economic issues and this strategic move by the first and leading sports association in Ghana will go a long way to help develop sports in the country.
