RANKING MEMBER – YOUTH, SPORTS AND CULTURE HON. KOBENA M.WOYOME, CALL’S FOR ALL-INCLUSIVE APPROACH IN APPOINTING COACHES FOR NATIONAL TEAMS

The Ranking Member-Youth, Sports and Culture Hon. Kobena Mensah WOYOME has called for an all-inclusive approach in the appointment of coaches into the national teams.

He made this call on Thursday where he shared his opinion that, there should be a broader consultation when employing national teams coaches where he made a key reference to the Black Stars in order to accommodate varied views from all stakeholders of the game.

The abysmal performance of Black Stars at the just ended 2023 Afcon in Ivory Coast followed by the sacking of head coach Chris Hughton, has resulted in many football loving fans, media and the general public to take a swipe at the handlers of the national teams, their mismanagement style and the skewed approach in the appointment of a coach for the senior national team.

However, in wading into what has become a public discourse, the Member of Parliament(MP) for the people of South Tongu Constituency in the Volta Region feels that the best way to go henceforth is to move away from the usual norm, and adopt the approach of doing an extensive consultation with all stakeholders to solicit for all manner of ideas to arrive at a common ground.

In an interview with Precisewebgh, the Hon. member said, “You see, this is where as a person who is in the middle of always, probably, an arbitor, somebody to also listen to grievances and maybe like a judge more or less, like a committee in parliament, we will not say anything to influence any judgement out there, so that at the end of the day they will begin to make references to the committee or any committee member that, oh even this committee member thinks that the ability in Mr ‘A’ is even seen to be better than ability in Mr ‘C’ for which reason, in us going to hire somebody to do this work let us go so that it will be as if ….. when in actual fact they may not have come officially to have sought for our position, so I am very careful.”

Hon. Woyome continued, “But I want to say that, it is something that we need broader consultation in identifying who we want to choose. Let it be as broad as possible, all stakeholders who thinks whatever.
I think there should be away, a window somewhere or the office at the FA or whoever at the Ministry who needs to be contacted with maybe some memo’s or with reasons or with….so that generally over a period of time, let say a month you open that window or two months you open that window to take views, any, of course, so you people, the journalists what you think about the way, who you think, of course, so that you can have generally maybe some ten or fifteen to choose from ok, then among these people if you know anything about any of them just submit it and all will be looked at fairly and then you can narrow it down……..

With your process of narrowing down, transparently communicated among everybody, and then you arrive at who you think is fine.
That will be a fantastic thing to do though, for me that will be a fantastic thing to do”.

The Hon member added, “so it will appear thorough, it will appear transparent and then of course value for money. The money of course that you will be paying should be money that the country is capable of paying. You don’t have to sweat too much to be paying that money.” He ended.

The Ghana Football Association is currently on the hunt for a new coach to lead the Black Stars after Chris Hughton was sacked for poor performance since his appointment in February 12, 2023.
