It was a sad Friday night for Ghana and Uruguay moment after the center referee from Germany whistled for the end of the final group H’ encounter played by both Nations in the 2022 FIFA world cup in Qatar.
Uruguay defeated Ghana 0-2 but failed to qualify to the round of 16 of the 2022 World Cup as they finished third behind South Korea in Group H.
Ghana on the other hand needed a draw or a win to propell them to the next stages of the competition but sadly lost to the Uruguayan’s who became a hindrance to the Black Stars some 12years ago from reaching the semi finals of the world cup for the first time in the country’s world cup history.
This time round it wasn’t Louis Suarez who prevented Ghana from reaching the knock out stage of the tournament but Giorgio de Arrascaeta who scored both goals for Uruguay through a near post header in the 25th minute. He added a second goal within 5 minute time from a classic sublime volley to make it 2 for the South American side.
The Black Stars fought back especially in the second part of the game to equalize by the inclusion of Kamaldeen Sulemana, Osman Bukari, Daniel Kofi-Kyereh and Antoine Semenyo but their efforts was waist full up front as a number of goal scoring opportunities were squandered.
Meanwhile, there had been an earlier penalty drama when captain of the Ghana team Andre Ayew saw his spot-kick saved by Sergio Rochet 20 minute into the first half of the game. The penalty was awarded by the referee after reviewing the goalkeeper’s foul on Mohammed Kudus in the penalty both through a pitch side monitor.
In the other group H’ match South Korea beat Portugal 2-1 to secure their qualification to the round of 16 alongside Portugal.
