Lionel Messi today achieved his ambition as a footballer by leading Argentina to win the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.
The world cup trophy has been the only missing link in the life of Messi’s medal collection, but the dream was finally achieved as Argentina won their third crown in their world cup history on penalties following one of the greatest finals in the tournament’s history at Lusail Stadium.
The South American side won 4-2 on penalties after a spectacular game which developed into the much-anticipated confrontation between the football tin god-Lionel Messi and France’s talisman Kylian Mbappe, who scored a hat-trick – the first in a World Cup final history since 1966 to push the game into penalty shoot out.
Earlier, Argentina had cruised into a two-goal lead, courtesy Di Maria in the 13th and Lionel Messi in the 23rd minutes respectively only for an explosive intervention within two minutes from Kylian Mbappe to turn the game into a spectacular hot chase from both sides of the team.
However, Messi shot Argentina back into the lead in extra time, but Mbappe completed his treble from a spot kick two minutes from the end of a chaotic 120 minutes plus added time.
The game finally went into penalties, with the two top stars-Mbappe and Messi opening the scoring. But Argentina and Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez saved France’s Kingsley Coman and Aurelian Tchouameni miss, led to Gonzalo Montiel to win the World Cup trophy for Argentina for the third time since it’s inception.
