Renowned gospel musician and pastor, Dr Sonnie Badu, has shared his sentiments on the Black Stars captains armband issues created by coach Otto Addo and his technical team during the 2024-2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Speaking on the abysmal performance and the team’s failure to qualify to Morocco 2025 Nations Cup, the celebrated musician, enumerated a lot of factors in the Black Stars, including the captains armband decision handed over to Mohammed Kudus by Otto Addo without the total blessings of Dede Ayew as the former captain.
During a talk show program on UTV, dubbed ‘The Unted Showbiz’ on November 23, 2024, the USA based Ghanaian pastor said, ..”The number 10 jersey is not worn, just like that, others have worn the 10 jersey after Abedi Pele…I feel like how they are even doing the transition, is disrespectful. If Dede Ayew has not retired, you don’t give his jersey to another person without his blessings”.
He continued, “Look, these things have spiritual implications. If he (Dede), has not blessed that person to wear the jersey, and says, for instance, I (Dede) have retired from football and therefore I have given my blessings to the jersey for another player to wear’, the jersey, should not be given to another player.
So if he (Dede), sit’s somewhere and sees another player wearing the number 10 jersey, his spirit will not be with that person to succeed”.
The musician/philanthropist, added, “Football is very spiritual, whether you want to look at it from any angle. Football is back with so many unseen spirits; football is spiritual and a lot of things happen in football that the eyes cannot see.
So we should stop creating the competitive brouhaha we are trying to create, by giving the number 10 jersey and the captain’s armband to Mohammed Kudus in a crucial game Jordan Ayew was involved. Jordan, wouldn’t flow, and that was the make or break game the confusion was created among the two players…”.
The multiple award winning gospel singer, songwriter and pastor, stated so many issues in the Black Stars setup, as some of the hindrances affecting the team’s current performance resulting in Ghana’s inability to qualify for next year’s AFCON.
Dr Sonnie Badu, is not only good at music, but also into football administration and management as he owns an agency called Eagle Eye Football Agency’ established to hunt for football talents in Ghana and beyond.
