Liverpool center back Ibrahima Konaté has expressed fears as the ‘Reds’ meet Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight.
Tonight encounter between these two top sides in the Champions League will be the fifth time in less than five years both clubs have met.
Liverpool will host Madrid in a round-of-16 rematch of last year’s final, which ended in a 1-0 victory for the Los Blancos.
The draw took place in last November, shortly after Liverpool had sealed second place in Group A and Real Madrid had clinched top spot in Group F.
In his reaction to the draw, Konaté said “I think the draw was crazy,” the Liverpool center back, who won’t play in tonight’s first leg due to injury, told the media, “We have a lot of big games. But now we have to show that we are the real Liverpool and show to the world our real potential.”
Maybe, Konaté’s comment points to the biggest challenge Liverpool faces, that is, maintaining belief. It must genuinely believe that, after four unsuccessful attempts, it can beat Real Madrid.
The Frenchman’s difficulty is that, the Reds have taken some emotional batterings against the Spanish giant over recent years and today’s game wouldn’t be anything different from their previous meetings.
Liverpool’s recent poor performances in the premiership has heightened people believe that Jorgen Klopp’s men will not leave up to expectation as they are more likely to be on the losing side.
