A total of 668 athletes from 114 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the Boxing Refugee Team have registered to participate in the first Boxing Road to Paris World Qualifying Tournament set to be hosted at the E-Work Arena in Busto Arsizio, Italy, from 3rd to the 11th of March 2024.
Two Individual Neutral Athletes (AIN) with a Belarusian passport have registered to take part in the tournament, while no individuals with a Russian passport applied.
Due to the exceptionally high participation, one additional competition day has been added to the event (originally scheduled from 4th to 11th March), with action now due to start on the 3rd of March.
Final participation numbers will be updated after the Boxing Entries Check and the procedure to validate all Teams’ entries and registrations will be done upon their arrival on site – on 1 March, 2024.
Meanwhile, Forty-nine Paris 2024 Olympic quota places (21 for women and 28 for men) across 13 boxing weight categories (6 women’s, 7 men’s) are at stake at the event.
The Boxing Road to Paris qualification pathway witnessed athletes competing in continental events at the European Games, the Asian Games, the Pan American Games, the Pacific Games, and at an ad-hoc African Boxing qualifier in Dakar, Senegal, last year, with a total of 139 athletes qualifying for Paris.
This year(2024), two world qualifying tournaments are taking place to distribute the last available 100 qualification spots for the boxing tournament of the Olympic Games Paris 2024, in accordance to the qualification system for the sport of Boxing.
Following Italy’s event, the second World Qualifying Tournament will be held in Bangkok, Thailand, from 26 May to 2 June, 2024. However, registrations for the event are not yet open.
Both World Qualifying Tournaments are open to all National Olympic Committees that have not yet had an athlete qualified in a specific weight category, and to Individual Neutral Athletes complying with specific eligibility criteria.
