There was joy in the camp of Ghana Black Queens ahead of their crucial Olympic game qualifier against the Copper Queens of Zambia after their outstanding bonuses was paid in time to serve as a source of motivation to the players.
The Youth, Sports & Culture Ministry finally settled arrears owed the Queens after an intense media and public pressure mounted on the ministry and the government to pay the ladies.
An amount of US$7,500 was received by each player as part of their winning bonuses for qualifying matches played last year.
However, this did not come easy until notable sports personalities like Agyemang Badu, Tony Bafoe, Yusif Chipsah and other media personalities including Nana Aba Anamoah, Juliet Bawuah etc got involved with a campaign on their social media handles dubbed #PayTheQueens followed by public criticism against the Ministry and the FA on how the women national teams are treated compared to their male counterpart.
Meanwhile, the Queens are in the final stages of the qualifiers after edging out Benin and Guinea respectfully. Ghana will therefore meet Zambia on Friday in the first leg of the qualifiers at the Accra Sports Stadium before departing to play the second leg on Wednesday, February 27, 2024 in Zambia.
