Afena Gyan Bitterly Reject Ghana Call Up

Young striker Felix Afena Gyan has turned down an invitation to play for Ghana in the U-23 qualification matches.

The US Cremonese forward was invited to strengthen the Black Meteors squad that come up against Algeria in the Under-23 Africa Cup of Nations home and away qualifying matches this week, but the youngster rejected the call up despite his club’s acceptance to allow him join his colleagues in Ghana camp.

Sources revealed that, the Ghana Football Association sent all necessary travelling documents to the Serie A club, but the player declined the invitation to be of the Meteors squad with reasons best known to him.

The 20-year attacker played a key part in the Ghana – Nigeria FIFA World cup play off games in March last year that ensured Black Stars qualification to the Qatar 2022 World cup.

The former AS Roma player was later dropped in the final squad released by former coach Otto Addo that might have probably influenced his current snub to play for Ghana.

Meanwhile, Afena-Gyan joined newly-promoted side Cremonese in the Serie A’ before the World cup from AS Roma for a fee around US$ 7 million US dollars but he is yet to score a goal in the top-flight Italian league this season having provided one assist in 16 appearance games.
